What Is Cold Form Steel?
Cold-formed steel (CFS) framing is manufactured by pressing or rolling steel sheet at room temperature into structural shapes — C-sections, Z-sections, and tracks. Unlike hot-rolled red iron, cold-formed members are lighter, thinner, and produced to very tight tolerances, making them ideal for projects where precision and cost efficiency matter.
Cold form steel is the workhorse of residential and light commercial construction. It's used in wall framing, roof trusses, floor joists, and secondary structural members. When combined with a primary red iron frame, it provides the complete structural system for virtually any building type.
